Depth camera depth map value interpretation

Hi, I'm using depth camera (libgazebo_ros_openni_kinect.so) on gazebo. The result depth map seems to be...the closer is darker...intensity value means the depth. Hence my question is what the relationships between the intensity value and the depth.

Also, How can I prolong the range of the depth camera?
