Hi, I am following a tutorial to get an STL mesh into Gazebo, but parts of the GUI I need to accomplish this task will not show up. At some point the tutorial instructs the user to select the custom shapes button under the insert tab, but there is no button like that. The only thing I have under the insert tab is a bunch of sample models, so I have no way to get the stl mesh into Gazebo.

Has anyone else had this problem or know the solution? Thanks

What Gazebo version are you using? Check if that matches the tutorial version on the top right corner.

I am using Gazebo 2.2.6. The tutorial is for Gazebo 6+. Could you tell me if it is even possible to get a custom model into Gazebo using this version?

The issue seems to be with the Gazebo version, which doesn't support the model editor yet. If I remember correctly, it should support STL meshes anyway, but they need to be referenced in the SDF file as described on this tutorial.

In any case, I strongly recommend upgrading to a newer Gazebo version, Gazebo 2 hasn't been supported for almost 3 years.
