how can I compute the gains for the PID controller for the robonaut?

I want to control the robonaut model that already exist using pid controller but I not expert in Gazebo.

I am using Gazebo and an already existed model of Robonaut. is it a must to use ROS?

Although not necessary, ROS has a lot of tools that will help you. Take a look at http://wiki.ros.org/Robots/Robonaut2
