alpha value for light colors

Does the alpha value used when specifying the Diffuse or Specular Color values for lights actually do anything? I thought they might be used to specify light intensity, but that doesn't seem to be the case. If the value isn't being used, then is it still there so that lights can be passed common::Color objects?
