Creating a connection between gazebo and a virtual machine without using ROS

I have a robotics framework running in a virtual machine and gazebo running outside of the vm on the same computer. I'm using Ubuntu for the host OS and a lite version of Ubuntu for the vm. How would I go about connecting the vm to send and receive data to and from a plugin hooked to a robot in the gazebo simulation via a TCP IP connection, since gazebo talks TCP IP internally? I would like to do this without using ROS.
