Creating a new Joint type in Gazebo

How would one go about creating a new joint type? I was browsing the ode and the gazebo source codes and I cannot figure out how are they connected. Where is it defined what kind of gazebo joint is which kind of ode joint and where the gazebo uses the ode interface. Could somebody show me?
