Loading large .tif to Gazebo 9 without crashing

I have a ~6000 x 6000 tif file which Gazebo is struggling to load and keeps crashing. But if I compress it too much I lose too much information. Any advice? Here is the .tif http://data.selfracingcars.com/thunderhill/kairos/dem.tif.gz

could be a out of memory issue? You can monitor memory usage, e.g. with top and see if that's the problem
