How to use Gazebo with ROS ddd

I am currently using Fuerte with Gazebo 1.0 but I want to try MoveIt. What is the best way to do this? Use the groovy gazebo or use the standalone 1.9? Can ROS Groovy interact with 1.9? Is it also possible to use roslaunch and spawn in 1.5?

I tried:

roslaunch gazebo_worlds empty_world.launch

Gazebo multi-robot simulator, version 1.5.0

Would a clean install of Groovy help? Or do I have to convert the files under the root account myself?
